Awards of Distinction

The City of Calgary Youth Employment Centre (YEC) is pleased to recognize The Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and Rocky Mountain College as the two recipients of the 2009 Career Ladder Award. Both organizations have worked with YEC in several ways during the past year to help youth reach their career goals. Congratulations!

The Career Ladder Award is presented annually by YEC to an organization, agency, or business in recognition of outstanding achievements in career enhancement for youth, through learning and training programs, job opportunities, and more.

To be eligible for this award, organizations must be or have been actively involved with the Youth Employment Centre and its clients by participating in at least one of the following activities:

  • Provide employment opportunities such as posting jobs, interviewing or hiring youth.
  • Provide work exploration assistance such as informational interviews, job shadowing, mentoring, or work experience.
  • Attendance at a Hiring Fair.
  • Actively support the Youth Career Planning Scholarship.
  • Offer learning and training opportunities for youth.
  • Volunteer to be highlighted as Monthly Employer Spotlight.

Diversity Initiatives in the Workplace

The term Diversity can be used to define the uniqueness of each individual in a population. Today, many employers and organizations strive to be representative of such diversity whether it be through Employment Equity or a program developed within their own business or organization.

Our communities are made up of so many different kinds of people and as we go about our days there are many people who value seeing diversity represented in the places where they shop, entertain, and do business. Being representative of diversity is not preferential treatment but a means to strive for understanding and corresponding to individual learning and cultural differences.

There are many ways to engage a diverse workforce such as researching how particular communities share information, work with liaison officers and organizations, create training programs to fit employment opportunities, and investigate posting with various job boards and career centres.

Featured below are some employers and their diversity initiatives:

Canadian Pacific Railway
Canadian Forces
Purolator Courier
Safeway
Southland
Talent Pool
Calgary Winter Club
